It takes a village to raise a child. ~ African Proverb

Some ideas are:
Birthdays that Benefit. Giving up gifts in lieu of donations to support children less fortunate.
These have been very successful in the past, not only with monetary donations, but also bringing awareness to our children. Teaching them of not only their own blessings, but the gift of sharing and giving to a child not as fortunate, across the globe. Typically, a geography lesson is usually learned as well. ;)
"It's a common way to celebrate birthdays in our house. We have had guests bring everything from shoes, school/art supplies, new underwear, to pocket change to benefit kids in Africa.
At first I encouraged the idea because I really didn't want another plastic toy to litter the toy room floor to later be thrown in the garbage. BUT after, noticing the change it made in my child, the sense of pride and compassion gained, and knowing the impact it made on children less fortunate... we made it a birthday ritual.
There is no greater gift than giving!" ~ Anonymous Mother
