On December 1st, 2016, the second year of our Encourage Mothers – Renew Hope program commenced, under the watchful eye of our partner Rudi International, in DR Congo. It started with 10 women enrolled in the program but 3 of them had to leave the program because of unexpected events happening in their personal lives. Rudi International was quick to identify  two new vulnerable women to join the class, bringing the class up to 9 participants. They are currently looking for one more woman to fill the last spot.

Among the 9 women, 3 of them are women that graduated from our first year of this program and returned as interns to assist the others and continue to improve their new skills. The interns are keeping busy; their assistance is critical in the success of this program.

“We tell them it seems impossible until it is done by relating to our own case at the beginning. I remember I knew nothing about using the pedal but later, I was able to perform it and now it is part of me” - Fifi, intern & mother of 7

The training can be really intimidating for someone who has never picked up a pair of scissors, measured a piece of material, or used a manual sewing machine. The interns are providing the much-needed encouragement to the new class whenever they are struggling or failing to perform a task on the first try. They serve as examples, encourage their peers, and share their own experiences of how this program has changed their lives.

“When I first came here, everything was hard for me. From using scissors to cutting a piece of tissue, it is a long journey. The month was not too long, now I am proud to present a shirt and a dress I was able to sew. I am thankful to God and to our trainers who are putting in a lot of efforts to help us go through our first steps” – Philomene, new student.

This program not only teaches these women a skill that they can use to support their family, it is healing them and building their confidence back up. This training is giving them another reason to live.

This year, LTL has introduced the possibility to sponsor these women. You will receive two personalized progress updates during the program and one final update upon graduation. You can also encourage these women by sending your sponsor a letter and/or picture. Help us end the cycle of poverty and visit HERE to donate and learn more. There are women still in need of sponsorship.
